Offsetting vaccine hesitancy

Erlinda was cheerful and responsive in a video interview on how she finally decided to take the COVID-19 vaccine.

The 70-year old Pantawid Pamilyang Pilipino  Program (4Ps) beneficiary of Brgy. Culasi in Roxas City was initially afraid of the possible effects of the vaccine on her health as an elderly.

But all her hesitations were over and done. She got the jab done.

She was among the city’s 11,047 vaccinated A2 Priority Group out of the 12,100 senior citizen eligible population as of the November 25 data from the Roxas City COVID-19 Monitoring Dashboard.

"Indi man gali masakit kay kabaliskaran sa akon gina-ekspektar (It did not hurt me contrary to what I was expecting)," said the grandmother in Hiligaynon with her a bit loose cloth face mask partly covering her nose during a talk with a local radio reporter.

She then pointed out that the insistent attempts by a Barangay Health Worker to

explain the health benefits of the COVID-19 vaccine made up her mind from being undecided to taking the shots.

“Akon ato gusto bangud nagsulod man sa akon panumduman nga basi malatnan ako sang virus kag mag lapta sa akon pamilya (It was my free will because it also come to my mind that I may contract the virus and spread it to my family),” she clarified, stressing that the vaccination must be voluntary rather than compulsory.

Erlinda is just one of the many Filipinos who manifested vaccine hesitancy but also ended up attesting that COVID-19 vaccines are safe and effective.

And for whatever reasons, it was the health benefits above all other gains that made her outweigh the risks. (JBG/AAL/PIA Capiz)
