Foods to keep your thyroid healthy

The thyroid is a butterfly-shaped gland found in front of the neck. It is a vital organ because it is responsible for regulating metabolism, temperature, and heart rate.

Thyroid diseases are rather common and these include hypothyroidism and hyperthyroidism. Hypothyroidism can cause constipation, weight gain, and excessive fatigue, while Hyperthyroidism can cause rapid weight loss, an unusually fast heartbeat, and anxiety.

Additionally, Thyroid diseases can have a significant impact on pregnant mothers and their babies. Women with thyroid disorders have a harder time getting pregnant and are more likely to miscarry. They may also give birth to an underweight baby, who has weak cognitive ability, and physical problems.  Children would indeed be affected by these consequences until they reached adulthood.

Here are foods that can keep your thyroid healthy:

1. Salt
Iodine is required for thyroid glands to function well. At home, make sure you're using iodized table salt.

2. Nuts
Iron-rich foods include cashews, almonds, and pumpkin seeds. They're not just high in iron, but they're also high in selenium, another mineral that helps your thyroid. You just need a few each day to have enough selenium.

3. Leafy Greens
Magnesium is present in spinach, lettuce, and other foods, and it plays an important role in your body's activities.

4. Seafood

Iodine is abundant in fish, shrimp, and seaweed. To maintain a healthy thyroid, consume little amounts of iodine-rich foods.
