TUBOD, Lanao del Norte (PIA)--In a joyous celebration of cultural heritage and unity, the weeklong celebration of the 64th Araw ng Lanao del Norte highlighted the talents and skills of the Maranao people, fostering a deeper understanding and appreciation of their vibrant culture and traditions through Maranao Night.

This enchanting evening brimmed with awe-inspiring performances of Maranaos through the playing of kulintang (a traditional instrument), kambayoka, or oratorical singing, and Warna, a Maranao band.

"Maranao Night has always been part of the activity wherein we showcase the talents and skills through music of our fellow Maranao brothers and sisters," said Governor Imelda "Angging" Dela Cruz Quibranza.

Reviving Maranao traditions

The Kalombayan sa Ranao Cultural Ensemble, comprising talented youth from Balo-i town, took the center stage and presented a mesmerizing showcase of Maranao dances such as Kapaginandang, Malong-Malong, Sipa sa Manggis, Fan Dance, Sayao sa Kasingkil, and Sagayan, or War Dance.

Mohammad Noor Saumay, a member of the ensemble, shared that they aim to preserve and revive the traditional practices and customs of the Maranao people.

Meanwhile, Mobarak Samporna Subodan, director of the ensemble, expressed his concern about the fading interest in traditional dances among the youth. He said the rise of modern technology and popular culture has gradually diminished their connection to their Maranao heritage. Thus, the concept of Maranao Night aimed to rekindle their interest and pride in their cultural roots.

"Karamihan sa mga kabataan ngayon walang hilig sa mga tradisyonal na sayaw. Dahil sa makabagong teknolohiya, nakalimutan na nila 'yung tradisyon namin bilang mga Maranao," he said.

Uniting Christians and Muslims for progress 

Lanao del Norte stands out as an example of unity and collaboration between Christians and Muslims. Board Member Achmad Taha underscored the remarkable harmony between Christians and Muslims that defined their community. With unwavering conviction, he emphasized the importance of preserving and strengthening this unity for the betterment of their people.

Meanwhile, Abdullah Dimaporo, a former 2nd district representative of the province, believes that collaboration and mutual support are crucial for progress.

"Magtibangay ta aron mabuhat nato ang gikinahanglan nga mapaangat ang panginabuhi sa katawhan sa atong nasud. Mag-usa kitang tanan, magtinabangay ta para sa kaayuhan sa atong mga anak karon," he said.

With each resounding beat of the kulintang (a gong-chime collection of instruments) and each graceful movement of the dancers, Maranao Night became an unforgettable platform, weaving together threads of talent and tradition while fostering a profound understanding and an enduring appreciation for their vibrant cultural legacy.

As the curtains draw on this dazzling ode to heritage and harmony, the echoes of the kulintang and the graceful movements of the Maranao dancers linger in the hearts of those who witnessed the beauty of Maranao Night.
