The rise of gender-neutral honorific ‘Mx’ fosters gender equality, inclusivity

Gender-fair language recognizes that language has the potential to perpetuate gender stereotypes and reinforces the idea that certain roles or professions are exclusive to one gender.

Language also evolves to reflect the diversity of the people it serves. Traditional titles like Mr. and Ms. have long been used to denote gender, but in an age where gender identity is more fluid and complex than ever before, it's time to introduce a more inclusive honorific: ‘Mx’.

Mx. is a gender-neutral title that emerged in the late 20th century as a way to address individuals without specifying their gender. It is pronounced "mix" and can be used in both formal and informal contexts. Mx. eliminates the need to make assumptions about a person's gender identity based on their name or appearance. It allows us to address individuals respectfully without reinforcing traditional gender norms.

A common example of gender-fair language is the use of inclusive pronouns. Instead of defaulting to the traditional "he" or "him" when referring to a person of unknown gender, we can use gender-neutral pronouns such as "they" or "them." This small change may seem insignificant, but it sends a powerful message to recognize and respect the diversity of gender identities.

Another aspect of gender-fair language is the avoidance of gender-specific job titles. Instead of using terms like "fireman" or "stewardess," people can use gender-neutral alternatives like "firefighter" or "flight attendant." This simple adjustment helps to challenge the notion that certain professions are limited to one gender, opening up opportunities for all.

Furthermore, it is essential to be mindful of the language used when referring to relationships. Instead of assuming that a person's partner is of the opposite gender, inclusive terms like "partner" or "significant other” can also be used. This not only respects the diversity of relationships but also avoids making assumptions based on gender norms.

The City Government of Zamboanga continuously recognizes the importance of gender equality and inclusivity and promotes these values by strengthening the use of gender-fair language within its offices.

Zamboanga City Gender and Development (GAD) Office conducted a four-day orientation seminar on the use of Gender-Fair Language and SOGIESC to different local government offices on September 11 to 14, 2023. This initiative not only reflects a commitment to social justice but also sets an example for other organizations and communities to follow.

“By adopting gender-fair language, we can create a more inclusive society where everyone feels valued and respected. It is not about being politically correct; it is about recognizing the inherent worth and dignity of every individual, regardless of their gender identity,” Wilfredo Aporongao, head of the Zamboanga City GAD office, emphasized.

Zamboanga City Government's commitment to strengthening the use of gender-fair language promotes that gender equality is not just a slogan but a tangible commitment to fostering a more inclusive and just society. (RVC/MLE/PIA9-Zamboanga City)
