Iloilo City dad eyes opening more economic activities

ILOILO CITY, July 2 (PIA) --More businesses are set to open in Iloilo City under the Modified Enhanced Community Quarantine (MECD) status, according to Mayor Jerry Treñas.

During the recent press conference with Presidential Spokesperson Harry Roque, Jr., Treñas noted the urgent need to open up economic activities in the metro to sustain people’s livelihood and business establishments.

"I will be issuing (an executive order) of more economic activities in Iloilo City and allowing more businesses to open but I will continue
to strictly enforce the protocols," he said.

The Treñas said that while the city government and the Department of Social Welfare and Development (DSWD) 6 continue to provide food packs, the economic activities under MECQ are limited.

The Mayor said that he is grateful with the implementation of the Department of Labor and Employment’s (DOLE) "Tulong Panghanapbuhay sa Ating Disadvantaged /Displaced Workers" (TUPAD) program, but it is barely enough to withstand the needs of the people.

“We cannot remain in this state forever,” Treñas said.

Meanwhile, Roque assured that the DSWD’s assistance would be given to Iloilo.

Roque also said that improving the health care utilization, specifically the Intensive Care Unit (ICU) capacity is one of the ways
to de-escalate both Iloilo province and the city’s MECQ classification to general community quarantine.

For his part, Department of Health (DOH) Undersecretary and COVID-19 treatment czar Leopoldo Vega said that their visit to Iloilo included meeting various medical directors of hospital institutions on how best they can adjust to the crisis or surge due to the spread of the virus.

“We need to come up with better strategies on making sure that the critical and severe cases in Iloilo and the nearby provinces can
access the critical care units here in Iloilo City,” Vega said. (LTP/LML-PIA6)
