Magalong suspends PNP, BFP trainings in Baguio

BAGUIO CITY(PIA) – The training of police and fire personnel and officials in this mountain resort have been suspended due to the breach of protocols causing spike  in COVID-19 cases in the city.

Mayor Benjamin Magalong said that they have noted violations of the minimum public health standards in the trainings being conducted separately by the Philippine National Police and the Bureau of Fire Protection in the city of Baguio which led to the decision to halt the trainings in the city.

He said that the violations committed by these training facilities caused the increase  of COVID-19 cases in the their units and in the city of Baguio lately.

“Madaming violations on the minimum public health standards, walang maayos na physical distancing pagdating sa barracks, maging sa classrooms, maging sa kanilang sports activities dahil pagkatapos ng kanilang sports activities hindi na sila nag mamask at wala na ang kanilang distancing (There were many violations on the minimum public health standards, there were no physical distancing within the barracks and in the classrooms, and during their sports activities they are seen not using facemasks),”  Magalong said during the Laging Handa Public Briefing on Tuesday.

Last month,104 COVID cases were recorded at the Cordillera Administrative Region Training Center. They   were among the 197 regular officers from various regions undergoing  a leadership training at the center.

The City Epidemiology Surveillance Unit  reported 26 more trainees tested  positive for COVID-19  from June 28 to July 11.

A training facility of the BFP in the city also recorded clustering of cases among the trainees.

Magalong  said he informed both PNP Chief General Guillermo Eleazar and BFP Chief Director Jose Embang Jr.  of the situation of the their respective training areas and  suspension of  trainings in Baguio.

Both heads of offices  assured that they will   investigate   the breach of protocols and  possibly file case against the violators. They also assured that they will conduct inspection and assessment of the their training facilities and will  comply with the minimum health standards and the other protocols in the city of Baguio before continuing their training programs.

“It is about time that we send a very strong message that if you cannot comply with the minimum public health standards in the city of Baguio, we will never accept any PNP training. They will have to follow ang policy in Baguio at hinid sila separate na republic dito (and they are not a separate republic here),” Magalong said.
