Navy ATF-North rescues fishermen off the coast of Silaqui

SILAQUI ISLAND, Pangasinan, Aug. 31 (PIA) – The Naval Forces Northern Luzon (NFNL) Command Area Task Force-North (ATF-North) rescued seven fishermen northwest off this coast on August 25.

In a report of the Philippine Coast Guard (PCG) Pangasinan to NFNL, the fishermen went fishing on the said day and went missing.

“The NFNL immediately mobilized its troops from Patrol Craft 388 to conduct the search and rescue operations,” said NFNL Commander Captain Francisco G. Tagamolila.

According to the report, the fishermen’s boat suffered from engine failure and was not able to go back to shore.

Upon rescue, the navy team immediately conducted proper health screening in adherence to health protocols imposed due to the coronavirus disease 2019 pandemic and were given food and water.

Further, their boat was tugged back to the shores of Bolinao.

"The quick response of our navy team has helped save the lives of the fishermen. Rest assured that your Navy in the North will remain committed in ensuring the maritime safety of our people on our northern coasts,” Tagamolila added.

In a statement from Northern Luzon Command Chief and concurrent Commander of ATF-North Lieutenant General Arnulfo Marcelo Burgos Jr., he said, “The close coordination among concerned member agencies, and their prompt response to the distress call is a testament of our steadfast commitment of ensuring the safety and security of our fisherfolks while performing their livelihood in our territorial waters.”

It was learned that the fishermen upon arrival at Bolinao were immediately turned over by the crew of PC 388 to PCG Pangasinan for proper disposition.

ATF – North is mandated not only to secure our sovereignty in territorial waters and ensure freedom of navigation, but most importantly ensure the safety and well-being of fisherfolks while at sea, to sustain their livelihood. (JCR/AHFF/PIA-1)
