WV yields 659, 378 MT of palay in Q1

ILOILO CITY, (PIA) -- Western Visayas has produced 659,378 metric tons of palay during the first quarter of 2021, according to the Philippine Statistics Authority (PSA).

The region’s major palay producer is Iloilo Province contributing 53.84% to the entire production.

This was followed by Capiz (18.14%), Negros Occidental (11.76%), Antique (9.89%), and Aklan (4.22%).

Meanwhile, the island province of Guimaras has recorded 2.14% contribution to the regional total palay produce.

A press release from PSA-Guimaras reported that the palay production of Guimaras declined by 2.30% from 14,455 MT in the first quarter of 2020 to 14,122 MT in the first quarter of this year.

Of the 14,122 metric tons total palay harvest, 10,049 metric tons or 71.16% came from rainfed farms, while irrigated farms produced 4,073 metric tons, contributing 28.84% to the quarter’s total palay crop yield.

“The decrement in production during the quarter is due to the decrease in area harvested on both irrigated and rainfed farms,” PSA-Guimaras Provincial Statistics Officer Nelida Losare said in the agency’s press report.

The data also showed that the estimated total area harvested dropped by 2.11% from 5,601 hectares in the first quarter of 2020 to 5,483 hectares in the same period of 2021. (AAL/LML-PIA6/PSA-Guimaras)
