RAGE-1 kicks off Nat'l Women’s Month celeb in Ilocos

By Kathlene Joyce C. Ramones

SAN FERNANDO CITY, March 9 (PIA) -- The Region I Advocates for Gender Equality (RAGE-1) hosted the annual regional kick-off activity of the National Women’s Month celebration on Tuesday via Zoom.

National Women’s Month is a commemoration of the enduring contributions of distinctive women and being proactive in preventing lapses from what we have achieved in gender equality and women empowerment.

In line with the theme “We Make Change For Women”, the activity aims to inspire actions in promoting a gender-responsive pandemic recovery and draw attention to the priority issues that must be addressed by future public servants.

The virtual kick-off ceremony joined by 228 active participants was composed of discussions that empower women, Zumba exercises, and trivia questions in between. PIA Regional Director Jennilyne Role moderated the whole-day event.

Topics focused on Gender Issues Affecting Women and the Civil Service, Gender Issues Violence and Justice System, and Gender Issues Affecting Women and Labor and Employment were presented.

In her message, Joy R. Ortega, the keynote speaker emphasized the role of women in the society.

“Women have shifted from thinking ‘I’m not ready to do that' to ‘I will learn by doing it’. We celebrate women by helping them help themselves by not dictating what they can do but reminding them that they are empowered to do more if they wish,” said Ortega.

Meanwhile, RAGE-1 President Perla Sotelo expounded on the over-arching theme “Women Make Change Work for Women.”

“Through our theme ‘Women Make Change Work for Women’ I believe that there is a huge impact to the role of women that was never empowered. We, with the assistance of men, work together as one. But it is our right to be given the respect and privilege as women,” Sotelo said in Ilocano.
