PIA-1 hosts forum promoting women’s rights, protection

SAN FERNANDO CITY, Apr.4 (PIA) – The Philippine Information Agency Regional Office 1 (PIA-RO1) virtually staged the forum dubbed, “Si Juana Protektado Laban sa Karahasan at Pang-aabuso” on Thursday.


According to Assistant Regional Director Freddie Lazaro, this forum aims to empower the citizenry, specifically women and youth, by raising their awareness on women-related laws, and the proper procedure when filing complaints for those who experience violence and abuse.


“We came up with this multi-sectoral forum not only as a mere activity for the Women’s Month but we aim to boost the awareness of the public on the laws and policies that protect women and young girls,” Lazaro said in his welcome reamrks.


The online learning session focused on the salient features of the women-related laws specifically, Republic Act (RA) No. 7877 or the Anti-Sexual Harassment Act of 1995; RA 8353 or the Anti-Rape Law of 1997; and RA 9262 or the Anti-Violence Against Women and Children Act of 2004.


Also, the assistance rendered by the Women and Children Protection Desk (WCPD) of the police was discussed.

The Philippine Information Agency stages an online learning session dubbed as "Si Juana Protektado Laban sa Karahasan at Pang-aabuso" on March 31, 2022 which was participated in by more than a hundred invidiuals composed mostly of members of various youths' and women's groups in the region.

Assistant Regional Prosecutor Maribelle Uminga of the Department of Justice-Region 1 and PMAJ Monette Balderas, the chief of the Police Regional Office 1’s WCPD served as the resource speakers. 


Uminga comprehensively tackled the said laws while Balderas presented the step by step procedures on filing complaints.


More than a hundred individuals composed of members of the Sangguniang Kabataan, Kabataan Kontra Droga at Terorismo, women’s groups, and government communicators in the region actively participated in the online learning session.


In her keynote message, Regional Director Jennilyne Role recognized the role of each individual in the promotion of women’s rights and protection, and encouraged everyone to be multipliers of this noble advocacy. 


“With all your support, we can make this nation a better place to live in. Kailangan natin magtulungan sa information dissemination para mas mapaigting pa natin ang proteksyon ng mga kababaihan,” Role emphasized.


Questions, issues, and concerns of the participants were addressed by the speakers on the later part of the event.


Meanwhile, PIA RO1 will spearhead another multi-sectoral forum this April which aims to educate the public on responsible voting. (JCR/AMB/CGRC, PIA Region 1)
