PIA-Pangasinan to hold cybersecurity awareness forum

DAGUPAN CITY (PIA) – The Philippine Information Agency (PIA)-Pangasinan Information Center will conduct an online cybersecurity awareness forum on Wednesday.

This is in line with the observance of Cybersecurity Awareness Month every September by virtue of Proclamation No. 2054 signed on May 11, 2010, by then President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo.

The proclamation highlighted the need to create public awareness on cybersecurity information and reinforce efforts to address policies focused on cybersecurity and develop a national cyberdefense capability.

Likewise, PIA deems it necessary to conduct this forum so that participants will be wary of posting and sharing information in their respective social media accounts to avoid being charged for violation of cybercrime laws and to ensure that the safety of every ‘Juan’ in cyberspace is attained.

PCMS Archimedes Fernandez, chief clerk/chief intel and investigator of the Regional Anti-Cybercrime Unit in Ilocos, will discuss cybersecurity.

Meanwhile, Intelligence Officer Ian Daileg of the National Intelligence Coordinating Agency (NICA) will tackle the topic, “Social Media vs. Reds Propaganda.”

PIA believes that the Filipino public can counter the black propaganda of the Communist Party of the Philippines-New People’s Army (CPP-NPA) being used to brainwash students, communities, and common people through social media.

Social media is a powerful tool to expose the opportunistic communist leaders who enjoy and lounge in the comforts of their homes and take shelter in foreign supporters, while the people on the ground are suffering, killed in armed encounters for fighting the government.

Expected attendees are information officers of local government units and national government agencies as well as youth leaders and student journalists in Pangasinan.

This will serve as a campaign drive to help promote vital cybersecurity information and create a collaborative network in the pursuit of safe and smart internet users.

In the afternoon, PIA also organized an orientation about the latest programs, services and benefits of the Government Service Insurance System and Social Security System for information officers and the media.
