Iloilo vet office monitors suspected ASF, implements precautionary measures

ILOILO CITY (PIA) - - The Iloilo Provincial Veterinary Office (PVO) is now implementing necessary precautionary measures and other protocols while waiting for the confirmatory test result for suspected African Swine Fever (ASF) case in the province.

“We have suspected cases of ASF that we are monitoring right now and we are waiting for the confirmatory result from the Bureau of Animal Industry (BAI) – Animal Disease Diagnostic Laboratory nga i-forward diri sa aton (that will be forwarded to) the province of Iloilo,” said PVO chief Dr. Darel Tabuada in a press conference.

Considering that this is a suspected case, according to Tabuada, Governor Arthur Defensor, Jr.  immediately called a disaster cluster meeting in preparation for a worst-case scenario if the samples sent to the Animal Disease Diagnostic Laboratory in Manila turned positive.

The samples were submitted on October 11 and the results are expected to come out on Thursday or Friday, October 14.

Tabuada did not disclose the exact location of the backyard-turned semi-commercial hog farm where the samples were taken in consideration of their ongoing operations in the field and not to stir panic in adjacent barangays and municipalities.

A press report from the Capitol said that Defensor also directed the activation of the municipal ASF task forces as part of the preparation for the worst case scenario.

The Iloilo provincial government together with the concerned agencies are doing all the necessary measures to contain the suspected ASF case.

Border control within the half-kilometer radius from "ground zero" is being implemented to prevent the transport of pigs in and out of the area.

Also, checkpoints were installed with the help of the barangay tanods and the Philippine National Police. (JBG/laf/PIA6-Iloilo)
