PNP warns public vs personalized messages scam

QUEZON CITY, (PIA) – The Philippine National Police (PNP) advised the public to be wary of a group of online scammers sending messages asking “ikaw ba ang nasa video?” to acquire their victim’s sensitive information.

PNP-Anti-Cybercrime Group (ACG) PLT. COL. Jay Guillermo reported this phishing scheme intends to lure a victim to click on a link and it will automatically capture their victim’s login credentials and other personal data.

“Ito yung tinatawag nating phishing link and pag pinindot mo yun automatically kasi it will download to your gadget. At kukunin nya kung ano yung naka-design sa program na yun,” PLT. COL. Guillermo explained.

To counter this, Guillermo told the public to ignore this kind of link from anonymous senders and not to give vital information without verifying the legitimacy of the message.

Guillermo added that the scammers can also obtain their victim’s bank account passwords, personal photos, and videos.

PNP-ACG reiterated that people should immediately report these incidents and share evidence with the authorities to bring these scammers to justice.

Based on their data as of October 31 to November 6, 2022, they already filed 30 cybercrime cases, implemented 18 cyber warrants, conducted 20 digital forensic examinations, and 302 cyber patrolling.

According to PNP, cybercrime awareness and public information campaigns are continuously being conducted by personnel of PNP-ACG in order for people to be aware of different scams in our country.

Victims can report this similar incident thru PNP-ACG Facebook account: PNP Anti-Cybercrime Group or on their official website: https://acg-pnp.gov.ph. (JAFD/PIA-PMD)
