Antique solon bares accomplishments, plans for 2023

SAN JOSE, Antique (PIA) -- Antique Lone District Rep. Antonio B. Legarda, Jr. expressed confidence in the accomplishments of his office in the first six months of his term as a legislator and assured the public of continued service toward development.

In a radio program on January 18, Legarda laid down the highlights of his legislative work in 2022 with 154 filed bills in the House of Representatives, including House Bill (H.B.) No. 3417 or the “One Town, One Product Philippines Act” and H.B. 2603 or the “Pangkabuhayan Act.”

Legarda said that he is an avid supporter of micro, small, and medium enterprises (MSMEs), thus, the bills to provide assistance to entrepreneurs not just in Antique but throughout the country.

Among the other notable legislative measures he filed are H.B. 1845 or the “One Student, One Tablet Act,” H.B. 1969 or the “Magna Carta of Private School Teachers,” and H.B. 1970 or the “Magna Carta of Public School Teachers.”

He also recognizes the need to protect national resources given their role, value, and impact on the economy, hence, the filing of H.B. No. 2604 or the “Philippine Ecosystem and Natural Capital Accounting System.”

The solon also cited P477 million in aid to different municipalities in the province through the Local Government Support Fund (LGSF) of the Department of Budget and Management, P99.5 million to 43,521 beneficiaries of the Assistance to Individuals in Crisis Situation (AICS), and P61.5 million to 30,367 grantees of the Department of Labor and Employment (DOLE)-Tulong Panghanapbuhay sa Ating Displaced/Disadvantaged Workers (TUPAD) program.

Legarda also revealed that he and his sister, Senate President Pro Tempore Loren Legarda, have secured P300 million for the construction of the new, higher, and wider Paliwan Bridge, while the P91 million budget that is supposed to be used for the retrofitting will be utilized instead for the reconstruction of the damaged part of the existing bridge.

Both the reconstruction of the current Paliwan Bridge and the construction of the new one will commence this year.

In 2023, he seeks to capitalize on the beauty of the province in boosting the tourism industry, intensify the rollout of the Commission on Higher Education (CHED)-Tulong Dunong Scholarship, establish Wi-Fi connectivity to upland barangays through the help of the Department of Information and Communications Technology (DICT), and many others.

For recognizing his work for the betterment of the province, the neophyte politician also thanked the public for the 90% job performance rating in the latest survey by the RP-Mission and Development Foundation, Inc. (RPMD), ranking 2nd among Western Visayas representatives. (AAL/BPS/PIA Antique)
