BJMP-Quezon appeals to LGUs for lot donations

MAUBAN, Quezon (PIA) – The Bureau of Jail Management and Penology (BJMP) through the office of the Quezon Provincial Administrator, Jail Supt. Arvin T. Abastillas, made appealed and encouraged the local government unit (LGU) of Mauban, Quezon to donate some lots in their area for the construction of jail facility.

Abastillas formally recently visited the office of Mayor Bautista Erwin Dwight C. Pastrana on January 12, to come up with measures to decongest jail facilities in Quezon Province that would provide persons deprived of liberty (PDLs) with appropriately humane environment during their incarceration.

“We want to sincerely express our thanks to the local government of Mauban, especially the honorable mayor, for their continued support of all our plans and programs that will significantly provide more spaces for welfare and development programs for PDLs, more livelihood opportunities and to maximize jail services,” Abastillas said in an interview.

Abastillas added that donation of lot is one of the main requirements of the national government to fund the construction of a jail facility.

Also present during the roundtable discussion was duly-authorized representative from the BJMP Regional Office CALABARZON, Jail Chief Insp. Marjorie S. San Juan of the Logistics Division, and Mauban Geographical Officer, Mr. Erick Harry Pansacola.

The request brings the municipality closer to having its own jail facility in line with the Jail Bureau’s initiative to strengthen partnership between the national agency and the local government in addressing the needs and concerns of the locality.

Apart from the Quezon and Pagbilao district jails in Pagbilao, Lucena City male and female dormitories, Candelaria and Gumaca district jails and Catanauan municipal jail, the newly constructed jail facility in Gen. Nakar is expected to be fully operational by first or second quarter of the year. (RMO/PIA Quezon with reports from BJMP-Quezon)
