Palapag Mayor is first LGBT+ appointed as PCGA squad member

CATARMAN, Northern Samar (PIA) -- Mayor Florencio “Fawa” Batula of Palapag, Northern Samar made a history as the first member of the LGBT+ (lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender plus) community to be appointed as member of the Philippine Coast Guard Auxiliary (PCGA) Executive Squadron.

The donning and oath-taking ceremony was held on March 22 at the Flag Officer’s Lounge, PCG national headquarters.

“Timely with the observance of Women’s Month, this appointment is another gain in the LGBT+ community as we are now recognized not in our weaknesses but in our strength as an asset in the community. Yes, we can do more and much given the opportunity,” said Mayor Batula.

Batula, a former member of the Sangguniang Panlalawigan for three consecutive terms before becoming a Mayor of Palapag, is a strong advocate of LGBT+ being recognized as one of the 10 inspiring members of the LGBT+ Community and a champion in pursuing peace and development in this part of the region.

“Rank is not about powers but responsibility and service in the community,” Batula said in her social media post.

“I firmly believe in the significant role a local government unit play in promoting its bio-marine diversities including its safety at sea,  security and law enforcements, and protection of our marine environment,” Batula further said.

Also appointed and donned with rank as member of PCGA Squadron is Assistant Secretary Francis John Tejano of the Department of Justice, a Nortehanon and former Mayor of Mapanas.

Northern Samar Governor Edwin Ongchuan, also a member of PCGA Executive Squadron, attended and witnessed the event with 2nd District Representative Harris Ongchuan and 803rd Brigade Commander Col. Efren Morados. (MMP/ANDiaz/PIA Northern Samar)
