Calamba peace, anti-drug abuse councils support ban on e-sabong, off-cockpit betting

CALAMBA CITY, Laguna (PIA) – Members of the Calamba City Peace and Order Council (CPOC) and Calamba City Anti-Drug Abuse Council (CADAC) have thrown their support to the prohibition of all e-sabong operations in Laguna.

The groups voiced their support in a joint meeting on April 19, where a memorandum issued by Laguna Governor Ramil Hernandez asking the suspension of e-sabong operations was presented.

The memorandum dated March 7, 2023 ordered all city and municipal mayors to ensure that e-sabong operations, e-sabong auxiliary operations, and off-cockpit betting station operations within their jurisdiction remain suspended.

Hernandez likewise instructed the provincial chiefs of the Philippine National Police to assist local government units (LGUs) in implementing the order and to take necessary measures for its full and strict implementation.

On June 20, 2022, Hernandez also issued a memorandum asking police chiefs and local chief executives in the province to revoke all franchises issued to e-sabong operators and for the latter to cease and desist in conducting their operations.

Under the Memorandum Circular No. 2023-030 of the Department of the Interior and Local Government (DILG), LGUs are directed to strictly implement the provisions of Executive Order No. 9, s. 2022 signed by President Ferdinand R. Marcos Jr., enacting the suspension of e-sabong operations nationwide. (CH/PIA-Laguna)
