DAVAO DE ORO (PIA) -- The Davao region recorded a total of 23 deaths by suicide from January to April 2023 per data from the Davao City Health Office (CHO).
Guesting in the One Davao virtual presser, Precious Manliguez of the Philippine Health Mental Association (PMHA) – Davao Chapter disclosed that the Davao CHO also noted 55 cases of suicide in Davao region for the year 2022.
“(Among the cases in 2022), 11 years old ang pinakabata (youngest), (while) 70 years old ang pinakatigulang (oldest),” she said.
Manliguez identified peer pressure, bullying, and relationship problems as the common causes of suicide among the youth and adults., adding that the additional cause for the adult is employment or financial problems.
For the elderly, Manliguez said that the common causes of suicide are medical condition, isolation, and poverty.
To address this pressing concern, the City Government of Davao and the PHMA Davao Chapter maintained the Operation Center for Psychosocial Support, which started to cater COVID-19 patients.
Manliguez urged Davaoeños and even those living outside Davao City to avail of the free online or face-to-face counselling from psychologist, and even psychiatrist as the case may be.
