UNDP cites Iloilo for mainstreaming RE projects

ILOILO CITY (PIA6) -- The United Nations Development Program (UNDP) has commended the Iloilo Provincial Government for its efforts to mainstream renewable energy (RE) projects in the province.

UNDP Resident Representative to the Philippines Dr. Selva Ramachandran, in a press conference conducted during the Regional Development Council (RDC)-6 last June 28, said that Iloilo has been active in eyeing for RE projects in the community, which also attracts investors.

“We are working closely with the DOE regarding the program in different parts of the country, including Iloilo, I must say that Iloilo is the most active when it comes to investment in renewable energy and I hope we can continue our support,” Ramachandran said.

He also explained that it is their work to support the government and share the vision of promoting renewable energy, noting that it is part of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDG) system – the access to clean and affordable energy.

Iloilo Gov. Arthur Defensor, Jr., on his part, acknowledged how climate change has affected the power situation, not just in the province, but in the whole country, noting that Local Government Units (LGUs) should continue working closely with stakeholders to implement RE projects.

“We look forward to working closely with key players in renewable energy. Together, we will combat emergency and crisis situations brought about by lingering conditions we call climate change,” Defensor said, who also attended the 2023 Investment Forum for Regional Energy after the media conference.

In the last quarter of 2022, the UNDP and DOE also recognized the province for its commitment towards RE through the passage of the I-PORE (Iloilo Provincial Ordinance for RE) and the installation of 75 KW rooftop solar PV (photovoltaic) project at the Iloilo Provincial Hospital, which was realized under the DREAMS (Development for Renewable Energy Applications Mainstreaming and Market Sustainability) Project of the DOE in partnership with the UNDP and Global Environmental Facility.

The provincial government also initiated Rooftop Solar PV Installation in three other district hospitals

in the province, namely the Dr. Ricardo Y. Ladrido Memorial District Hospital in Lambunao, Iloilo; Jesus M. Colmenares Memorial District Hospital in Balasan; and the Ramon D. Duremdes District Hospital in Dumangas town. (AAL/JNH/PIA6 Iloilo)
