Davao Oriental mourns over death of Gov. Malanyaon

CITY OF MATI, Davao Oriental (PIA) - - The province of Davao Oriental is now under the period of mourning from June 29 to July 7 for the untimely demise of Governor Corazon N. Malanyaon.

Succeeding the late governor, Governor Niño Sotero Uy made the declaration in his first order as the local chief executive of the province.

Uy issued Executive Order No 1, series of 2023  to honor and recognize the selfless dedication to public service of the late Governor Malanyaon.

During the period of mourning, Philippine Flags in all the buildings and places in the province are to be flown in half-mast; commemorations of important dates and legal holidays are to be kept short, and in a somber tone.

Uy also directed all the barangays to refrain from extravagant celebrations of fiesta, founding anniversaries, and other celebrations during the period.

Governor Malanyaon passed away at 73 years old on Wednesday, June 28.

President Ferdinand Marcos and Vice President Sara Duterte separately visited her wake on July 1, 2023 at Cosmopolitan Memorial Chapels in Davao City.

The wake of the late governor at the Provincial Capitol Covered Court in the 

City of Mati has been opened to public viewing starting July 2 until today, July 3. Her remains will be brought to her hometown in Cateel on July 4 and will be opened for viewing until July 6.

Malanyaon will be laid to rest on July 7 at Davao Memorial Park in Davao City.

She is serving a fresh term as a re-elected governor of the province, a position she first held in 2007 to 2016.

She started her public service as a councilor of Davao City in 1986, and later on served as a representative of the First District of the province in 2001 to 2007, and 2016 to 2022. (mlu/PIA Davao Oriental/Photos from Provincial Government of Davao Oriental)
