LGU Ocampo states support to IPs, allocates funds for future projects

Naga City (PIA) – The local government unit of Ocampo in the province of Camarines Sur held a day of honor for indigenous cultural communities and indigenous leaders in the town on Wednesday, August 9. This event coincided with the celebration of the World IP Day with the theme, “Indigenous Youth as Agents of Change for Self-determination.”

As youth IPs, NCIP Bicol Regional Director Agosto Maglunsod addressed that it is very important for them to adapt to the digital needs of the world. He said, “Majority of our elders and leaders cannot cope up with the pace of technology because of their age and other factor. But IP youth can develop new technologies because it is during their time that computer technology was introduced to the society. They can also develop new skills to offer solutions and contribute to a more sustainable, peaceful future for our people and our planet.”

He advocated that support shall also be given to them in the area of training, livelihood and education.

Director Maglunsod also discussed the rights and privileges of IPs according to RA 8371 or IPRA Law of 1197, and the harmonization, operationalization and institution of 11 building blocks as the key element to have a resilient, relevant and responsive ICCs and IPs.

With 18 tribal communities in the municipality, Ocampo Mayor Ocampo Ronald Allan Go in his speech, assured the support and aid of its LGU for the needs and requests of the ICCs. He also stated no objection for any proposal of sustainable projects for every IP community in their town, and his administration will exclusively cater to their concerns.

Morover, Mayor Go approved the increase of the chieftain’s regular allowance of P700 from formerly, P400. (PIA5/Camarines Sur)
