Palace declares September 20 a special non-working day in Ilocos Norte

LAOAG CITY, Ilocos Norte (PIA) – Another holiday is lined up for the Province of Ilocos Norte in September.

The Malacanang has declared September 20 a special non-working day in the province to commemorate the 125th birth anniversary of Josefa Llanes Escoda.

Escoda, who was born in Dingras town, founded the Girl Scouts of the Philippines on September 20, 1898.

On behalf of President Ferdinand R. Marcos Jr, Executive Secretary Lucas Bersamin signed Proclamation No. 316 to allow Ilokanos “be given full opportunity to participate in the occasion and enjoy the celebration.”

Escoda is known for being one of the most notable Filipino women and a world war heroine.

During the World War II, Escoda played a significant role by offering aid to prisoners of war and help reconnect them with families in Manila.

She was able to gain trust of Japanese forces that she would use their resources to aid local prisoners in camp until she and her husband were arrested.

It was believed that she was severely beaten and executed on January 6, 1945.

To this day, she serves as an inspiration to women for her remarkable contribution in campaigning for women’s suffrage. (JCR/MJTAB PIA Ilocos Norte)
