Educational assistance benefits 700 indigent students in La Union

SAN FERNANDO CITY, La Union (PIA) – The Office of First District Representative Francisco Paolo P. Ortega V and the Department of Social Welfare and Development (DSWD) Field Office 1 led an educational assistance payout to indigent students at the  Don Mariano Marcos Memorial State University-Mid La Union Campus (DMMMSU-MLUC) covered court on September 21.

The educational aid is under the Assistance to Individuals in Crisis Situation (AICS) program.

The AICS is one of the social welfare services of DSWD that provides educational assistance as well as transportation, food, burial, and medical help for support to individuals in need.

Around 700 students of higher learning institutions in the first district of La Union benefit from the educational assistance payout in the City of San Fernando, La Union on September 22.

Funding for the said payout was made possible through the efforts of Congressman Ortega and cascaded to the DSWD Field Office 1 for implementation.

This will help them defray school expenses and/or the cost of sending students/children to schools such as school fees, supplies, projects, allowance, transportation, and other related expenses.

The beneficiaries are students from public and private schools, including the DMMMSU-MLUC, the DMMMSU-North La Union Campus, and other higher learning institutions in the first district of La Union.

Ramon B. Torres, chief of staff of Congressman Ortega V, reminded the beneficiaries to use the assistance provided for their educational needs and propel them into a better future.

“Sana pangalagaan at pagyamanin nila ang assistance na naibigay. Ang pakiusap namin ay sana mag-aral sila ng mabuti at walang maging failing grade, walang [incomplete] at walang drop sa bawat semestre na kanilang papasukan,” Torres said.

He also said that each beneficiary received P8,500 for the current semester, totaling to more than P5.9 million distributed for the 700 students provided with assistance during the payout.

Mr. Nestor Minodin from Bacnotan, La Union, who received the educational assistance on behalf of his child who was taking an examination at the Union Christian College (UCC) in this city, said that the assistance is timely and helpful given his inability to work and provide for the education of his child due to a recent accident.

"Malaking bagay po sa akin itong [educational assistance] bilang isang ama kasi hindi na ako nakakapagtrabaho ng mabigat dahil nagkaroon ako ng aksidente kamakailan," Minodin said.

Individuals in crisis and who are need financial assistance may head to their respective local social welfare and development offices (LSWDO) for assessment and assistance on availing the DSWD’s AICS program. (JCR/AMB/CCMT, PIA La Union)
