DOST holds disaster communication training in Bohol

TAGBILARAN CITY, Bohol, October 14 (PIA) – The Department of Science and Technology’s (DOST) Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (PHIVOLCS) conducted a seminar-workshop in Bohol to capacitate disaster communicators in ensuring the accuracy and consistency of the messages being relayed to the public and to promote effective science and risk communication.

The workshop was also in time for the 10th year anniversary of the Bohol Earthquake that struck in 2013.

Held on October 12, 2023 at the Capitol Ceremonial Hall, the “PHIVOLCS InfoPress: Understanding and Communicating Geologic Hazards in Region 7” was attended by media practitioners and government Disaster Risk Reduction and Management (DRRM) and information officers.

The activity provided them with an avenue to listen and understand the essential geologic hazards information and commonly-used terms in reporting volcanoes, earthquakes, and tsunamis, for their future use in disaster reporting.

Through the said workshop, PHIVOLCS hopes to improve the understanding of geologic scenarios to promote appropriate preparedness measures, clarify commonly-used terms in reporting geologic hazards, orient participants on how to properly respond to disasters.

Resource persons were from DOST PHIVOLCS who tacked the following topics: an introduction to DOST-PHIVOLCS by Director Teresito C. Bacolcol, Review of Common Terms by Science Research Specialist Melissa Mae P. Tamayo, Understanding the Science of Earthquake Scenarios by Supervising Science Research Specialist Jeffrey Perez, Understanding the Science of Tsunamis by Senior Science Research Specialist Charmaine V.
