From a local community garden to Region 1 representative in the search for Model Bio Intensive Gardening, the Ilocos Norte Muslim Association (INUMA) Farm has provided not only an abundance in homegrown vegetables but also cultivated unity in a community.

The INUMA farm which started during the pandemic now thrives under the care of the INUMA members, who are mostly displaced Muslim women, who are also beneficiaries of the Pantawid Pamilyang Pilipino Program (4Ps).

With the dedication of INUMA caretakers, they were able to secure the Regional winner title in the search for Model Bio Intensive Gardening and will be representing the Region in the National Competition.

This project was possible through the collaboration of different organizations including the City Government of Laoag, the City Social Welfare and Development Office (CSWD), and the City Agriculture Office.

The farm, which is located in Barangay 1 San Lorenzo, Laoag City, Ilocos Norte also made noise when photos of “hugot” lines plastered around the farm went viral online when netizens found it relatable and funny.

Truly, the INUMA community farm continues to leave a mark not only for the Muslim fellows who benefit from the project but also for the environment for its sustainability.

They say that it takes a village to raise a kid; the same can be said when growing a community garden. It needs proper care, nurturing and consistent looking after. The INUMA community truly exhibited unity in growing a winner-worthy garden. (JCR/EJG, PIA Ilocos Norte)
