A ray of hope and pride shines upon the people of Lanao del Norte as the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) declared the majestic Mt. Inayawan Range Natural Park (MIRNP) as the 53rd ASEAN Heritage Park (AHP), the 11th in the Philippines, and the 4th in Region 10.
The declaration, made during the celebration of the Environment Day of the 64th Araw ng Lanao del Norte, marked a significant milestone for the country and ASEAN region, showcasing the park's breathtaking beauty and ecological importance.
In northern Mindanao, there are additional AHP that have been designated, namely, Mt. Kitanglad Range Natural Park in Bukidnon, Mt. Malindang Natural Park in Misamis Occidental, and Mt. Timpoong-Hibok-Hibok Natural Monument in Camiguin.
The other AHP in the country are Agusan Marsh Wildlife Sanctuary, Mt. Makiling Forest Reserve, Mt. Apo Natural Park, Mt. Hamiguitan Range Wildlife Sanctuary, Mt. Iglit-Baco National Park, Tubbataha Reefs Natural Park and Pasonanca Natural Park.
The recognition also makes the MIRNP as significant as the Kinabalu National Park and Gunung Mulu National Park in Malaysia; Lorentz National Park in Indonesia, and Khao Yai National Park and Kaeng Krachan National Park in Thailand.

Haven of biodiversity and cultural heritage in Lanao del Norte
Nestled in the heart of Lanao del Norte, MIRNP stands as a testament to the resilience and rich biodiversity of the area. Stretching across an elevation of 1,563 meters above sea level, this enchanting park is a haven of lush greenery, diverse ecosystems, and pristine flora and fauna. It encompasses a vast expanse of unspoiled forests and three magnificent lakes: Malaig, Pantar, and Songgod. It is hailed as the largest remaining virgin forest in the province, capturing the imagination and wonder of all who behold its natural splendor.
Endemic wonders thrive in MIRNP, including the endangered Pinsker's Hawk Eagle, the critically endangered Philippine Eagle, vulnerable Magkono tree species, and the graceful Philippine Flying Lemur.
To commemorate this historic milestone, an iconic landmark was unveiled, symbolizing the rich cultural heritage of the region and the harmonious coexistence between humans and nature. Rising tall and majestic, the Sarimanok, a legendary and mythical bird in Maranao folklore, stood as a testament to the vibrant traditions and values that defined the province.
Dr. Arvin Diesmos, director of Biodiversity Information Management-ASEAN Centre for Biodiversity, commended the collective efforts of stakeholders, emphasizing their contributions to its sustainable management.
"We commend the support of all stakeholders, particularly the provincial government of Lanao del Norte and the local government of Nunungan, in the participatory governance of the park, contributing to its sustainable management," he said.

Protected national park and vital water source
In 2018, MIRNP was officially designated as a national park under Republic Act 11038, also known as the Expanded National Integrated Protected Areas System Law. Encompassing an expansive area of 4,236 hectares and spanning 25 barangays in Nunungan town, the park serves not only as a crucial biological reserve but also as a vital watershed, providing essential water resources to the region's inhabitants.
Department of Environment and Natural Resources Assistant Secretary Arleigh Adorable emphasized the importance of adopting a holistic approach by integrating an integrated coastal management plan into comprehensive development strategies.
"More than a thousand households depend on the park for irrigation for industrial and water supply, as well as food. This is another treasure that Filipinos can truly be proud of. It brings honor and pride to the people of Lanao del Norte," he said.
Embracing a legacy of environmental stewardship
Recognizing the devastating consequences of environmental degradation and the need for action, Senator Christopher Lawrence "Bong" Go and Governor Imelda "Angging" Dela Cruz Quibranza encouraged the community to protect their cherished land.
"We have witnessed firsthand the devastating consequences of environmental degradation and climate change. Understanding that our actions today will shape the legacy, we will lead for generations to come," said Quibranza.
