Support Local: Sinirangan-made products star in DTI Products Fair

Eastern Visayas is exhibiting innovative homegrown products in this year’s Products Fair of the Department of Trade and Industry 8 (DTI-8), tagged as Gawang Otso.

The DTI-led event kicked off on August 17 and will run until August 20 at the Robinsons North Tacloban. Trade officials are optimistic about generating P2.3 million in sales from this four-day fair.

LET THE TRADE FAIR BEGIN: DTI-Region 8 officials led Assistant Regional Director Ma. Delia M. Corsiga (3rd from left), in partnership with Robinsons Place North Tacloban, represented by Marketing Communications Officer Anthony Evan A. Geonzon (4th from left), officially launched the Eastern Visayas Products Fair, dubbed as GAWANG OTSO, through a ribbon cutting last August 17, 2023. A total of 65 micro, small, and medium enterprises (MSMEs) put up their stalls to promote and sell different food and leather products, sweet delicacies, winery, chips, and more.

DTI ensures that the products exhibited in the Gawang Otso have undergone product development and improved packaging design, providing quality and affordable products to the customers.

Among the products highlighted is the Island’s Best Calamansi Concentrate of Agriehwells Marketing Cooperative in Eastern Samar, as it is Halal certified.

Rosario G. Amoroto, general manager of the Island’s Best Calamansi Concentrate, shared her story of establishing the business.

“We started as a home-based business in 2004, then got the DTI registration in 2009 and a Halal certification in 2021. We urgently responded to the overharvesting problems of the Kalamansi on Homonhon Island in Guiuan, helping our fellow farmers earn more market in return,” Amoroto said in dialect.

DTI product fairs like this help Amoroto’s small business to grow and even compete in the national arena as their business ventures in well-known supermarkets in Metro Manila and local distribution in Tacloban City.

Local intricately designed products like woodcrafts, handicrafts, shellcrafts, and furniture were also proudly displayed at the fair with several designs and sizes to choose from.

MSMEs continuously receive technical support from DTI, Department of Science and Technology (DOST), Department of Agriculture (DA), and others, including financial initiatives given by some government officials, as these entrepreneurs continue to generate volume sales for production.

Meanwhile, Ma. Delia M. Corsiga, assistant regional director of DTI-8, strengthens the promotion and invitation of this trade fair by reaching out to restaurants, operators, and food establishments.

“Our drive to support local is important now, more than ever. So, we need to promote economic independence, and this can only be achieved through the spirit of tangkilikan sa bawat Pilipino.”

Most exhibitors participating in Gawang Otso will attend the Eastern Visayas Trade Fair, dubbed as Bahandi at SM Mega Mall on October 11-15, 2023.

The trade fairs are one of the DTI initiatives as they commit to continuing to organize this kind of market-matching event.

A total of 116 MSMEs are expected to participate in the Trade Fair in October. (LDL/AAC/PIA Leyte)
