Aimed at curbing text scams and other cybercrimes by regulating the use of Subscriber Identity Module (SIM) cards, President Ferdinand “Bongbong” Marcos, Jr. signed into law the SIM Registration Act or Republic Act No. 11934 on October 10, 2022. The National Telecommunications Commission (NTC) has called on affected and interested parties to a public consultation for the Implementing Rules and Regulations (IRR) was held virtually on December 5, 2022. The law took effect last October 28. It requires all mobile users to register their SIM card prior to activation. Both prepaid and postpaid SIM card owners are required to register their SIM within 180 days from the effectivity of the law.
