Literacy plays a vital role in providing individuals with the relevant knowledge, skills, and competencies in transforming education and shaping more sustainable and peaceful societies.
Literacy contributes not only to the enrichment of lives of the citizens by gaining the capability to function effectively in the society but also in the overall progress of the society in other areas of development.
This International Literacy Day 2023 we are called upon to promote literacy in the entire Sustainable Development Goal Spectrum, focusing on the five pillars of: People (Social Development), Planet (Environmental Protection), Prosperity (Economic Development), Peace and Partnership under the theme ‘Promoting Literacy for a World in Transition: Building the Foundation for Sustainable and Peaceful Societies.’
In addition, the Literacy Coordinating Council, an inter-agency body that promotes universalization of literacy in the country, aims to celebrate the significant role of societies in building a more literate society through this year’s theme of the celebration of the literacy week: “Building a Culture of Literacy: The Role of Communities as Catalysts for Literacy Development.”
