Spanish ambassador praises Filipino traits rooted in history

Spanish Ambassador to the Philippines Jorge Moragas Sanchez praises the positive traits of the Filipino ancestors as embedded in history during the wreath laying rites at the San Luis de Tolosa Church in Baler in commemoration of the 122nd Anniversary of the Historic Siege of Baler and the 19th Philippine-Spanish Friendship Day. BALER, Aurora (PIA) -- Spanish Ambassador to the Philippines Jorge Moragas Sanchez recognizes the positive traits of the Filipinos which are embedded in history.

Sanchez said that the Historic Siege of Baler from July 1, 1898 until June 2, 1899 is an iconic example of bravery, patriotism, and humanity, and an act of gallantry and friendship during the wreath laying rites for the commemoration of the 19th Philippine-Spanish Friendship Day at the San Luis de Tolosa Church in Baler.

“On this very same day, have you heard of the heroic deed [of the Filipinos] to the Spanish troops seized in San Luis church? President Emilio Aguinaldo issued a decree praising the Spanish soldiers, considering them as friends instead of prisoners of war, and facilitating their safe return to Spain. Based on this magnanimous act, we have been celebrating together for the past years our friendship day," he cited.

Sanchez said that this one of the longest and hardest sieges in history between the Filipino troops and Spanish garrison has grounded another golden milestone in the friendship of the two countries.

The Spanish ambassador added that the memory of the first circumnavigation of the world 500 years ago has proven that grace, mercy, and humanity are traits embedded in the Filipino character.

“The Spaniards people could cherish for the first time that humanity when the fleet led by Ferdinand Magellan and Juan Sebastian Elcano arrived languishing in the shores of the Philippines in Eastern Samar after months of scarcity across the Pacific Ocean,” he quipped.

Sanchez said that Filipino ancestors have provided food, water, and supplies to the starving, dehydrated, and sickly crew of the ships which led to the successful outcome of their journey.

These traits, Sanchez said, have anchored the Philippines to be a major destination not only for Spain but for many countries in Asia. (CLJD/Jag Lyra D. Costamero-PIA 3)
