TUGUEGARAO CITY, Cagayan (PIA) - - The Department of Agriculture (DA) Region 2 has already rolled-out its vegetable production projects in school, barangays, and urban centers.
Bethsaida Duruin, focal person for the DA, said that there were 500 schools targeted for the Gulayan sa Paraalan program and 200 barangays were identified for a separate project called Gulayan sa Barangay.
"The programs are part of the government's effort to produce safe food and increase food productivity and security in the region," Duruin said.
She said that parents of students are enjoined to plant vegetables in school gardens, since schoolchildren are not yet allowed to go to school.
"The parents and teachers plant and take care of the garden. The parents [do the planting] as they submit the modules of their children [to the teachers]," Duruin said.
She also added that they have targeted the cities in the region and some highly urbanized municipalities for the Urban Farming program.
"Aside from these, we also have the Bayanihan 2 funding for vegetable production for the three cities and 10 municipalities in the region. This is part of our effort to increase food production amidst the pandemic," she said.
