QUEZON CITY, (PIA) -- Various bikers from different parts of the country on Saturday collectively marked the 40th day of the untimely passing of former Far Eastern University football player Keith Absalon and his cousin Nolven in Masbate City on June 6.
The campaign would also call for justice for all the victims of the Communist Party of the Philippines-New People’s Army-National Democratic Front (CPP-NPA-NDF), including the two who died when an anti-personnel mine was detonated along the road in Barangay Anas in Masbate while the cousins were biking with their family. Nolven’s 16-year old son also sustained serious injuries in the blast.
This cycling event was initiated by youth groups and civic organizations spearheaded by the National Youth Commission (NYC) and the Propelling Our Inherited Nation Through our Youth (Pointy Inc.) to raise awareness on the lawless violence instigated by the CPP-NPA-NDF that victimize the youth.
In the National Capital Region (NCR) hundreds join the Bike for Peace and converged at Camp Aguinaldo in Quezon City to take a cycling tour across Metro Manila.
In Bicol, bike enthusiasts converge at the Peñaranda Park in Legazpi, Albay to show their solidarity and support for the government’s peace efforts to end the armed conflict. Similar bikers meet up in Sorsogon to also join the cycling event.
In Zambales, bikers were en route from Barangay East Poblacion in Palauig to Camp Kainomayan at Barangay San Juan in Botolan town.
In Olongapo, a simple prayer signaled the start of their cycling tour which began at the Olongapo City Police Station.
In Negros Occidental, participants suited early to connect with their fellow cyclists at the EB Magalona Municipal Hall.
In Palompon, Leyte, hundreds of bikers also joined the advocacy ride supported by the local Philippine National Police.
Malacañang on Thursday has given the green light for the bike event in areas under the classification of general community quarantine and modified GCQ.
The government has also asked all participants to strictly observe and comply with the minimum public health standards and safety measures during the activity. (PIA-NCR with reports from OJT Janna Pineda)
