CALAPAN CITY, Oriental Mindoro (PIA) -- The Municipal Social Welfare and Development Office (MSWDO) in the town of Baco conducted training on child labor laws to parents and their children in Brgys. Tagumpay and Mangangan 1 on August 6 & 10, respectively.

The training was conceptualized after the Department of Labor and Employment (DOLE) initiated massive inspection in different barangays to check if there are children who are engaged in child labor.  Based on the results of on the inspection, the Sangguniang Barangays made plans on how to address the issue.

As part of the interventions, MSWDO conducted a seminar/orientation to parents and their children about the provisions mandated in the Philippines' Child Labor Law.

Likewise, the local government's social workers provided  one-on-one counseling to them.

In Article 137 of the labor code provisions on young workers, it says that no child below 15 years of age shall be employed, except when he works directly under the sole responsibility of his parents or guardian, and his employment does not in any way interfere with his schooling. The provision further states that children should not engage in an undertaking which is hazardous or deleterious in nature.  (LTC/PIA-OrMin)
