QUEZON CITY, (PIA) -- Manila Bay Site Coordinating Management Office (MBSCMO) and North Field Office (NFO) under the regional office of the Department of Environment & Natural Resources in the National Capital Region, recently installed a trash trap at Tugatog Creek in Malabon City.

The trap was placed on the midstream portion of Tugatog Creek—one of the tributaries of Tullahan River—to help prevent solid waste from reaching adjoining waterways and Manila Bay without hampering water flow.

Tugatog Creek stretches around 1080 kilometers long and drains parts of Barangays Tugatog and Tonsuya in Malabon City, and Barangays 2 and 8 in Caloocan City.

According to Regional Executive Director Jacqueline A. Caancan, the installation of trash traps in strategic locations of Metro Manila is another strategy that they adopted “to stop the accumulation of garbage in Manila Bay”.

“Apart from the regular cleanups we do in coordination with local governments and other Mandamus agencies, we’re trying to address the issue of pollution upstream and prevent garbage from reaching Manila Bay,” Caancan said.

“Majority of the trash that we see on the shorelines Manila Bay come from inland waters, from its tributaries, and it is extremely important that we address the issue at its source,” she added. (DENR NCR/PIA-NCR)
