LGU-San Miguel launched BION to fight fake news

SAN MIGUEL, March 11 (PIA) –- The local government unit of San Miguel has recently established the Barangay Information Officers ’Network (BION) to help promote government’s advocacy to the people.

At the 24th Municipal launching of BION held at the E-Center, Mayor Angelito Martinez II was pleased that with the help of the Philippine Information Agency (PIA) BION was established in their town to vigorously combat fake news.

Martinez said the Barangay Information Officers (BIOs) comprised of Sangguniang Kabataan (SK) chairmen appointed by their Barangay Captains can greatly help the government bring the accurate information to the farthest barangay in their city.

“Through BION, government programs can be announced to the people especially those in the most remote barangays and also to prevent the spread of fake news on social media platforms that cause Filipinos to be divided,” Martinez said.

Martinez added that with the help of newly-sworn-in Barangay Information Officers, the propaganda of communist groups will no longer be able to penetrate the barangays and instead the real information will be made available to the people.

The local chief executive was pleased that the majority of the BIOs who attended were the Sangguniang Kabataan (SK) chairmen of the barangays as they are young and highly skilled at using social media platforms on a constant basis to facilitate the delivery of vital information to their concerned barangays especially the COVID-19 response efforts undertaken by the government.

The Barangay Captains also attended the event so that the BIONs ca be guided in the performance of their duties and responsibilities.
After the orientation, the BIOs made their pledge of commitment that they would fulfill the duties entrusted to them by the government in disseminating timely, accurate, and relevant information to avoid the spread of fake news.

The event was attended by Regional Director Noemi Edaga of the Philippine Information Agency and Richard Paragas of the Philippine Tobacco Industry. (RVC/GCC/PIA-Zamboanga del Sur)
