CEBU CITY, Cebu, March 15 (PIA) -- The Commission on Population and Development (POPCOM) Region 7 announced that 127 local government units (LGUs) in Central Visayas have already designated Population Officers.
This was announced by POPCOM-7 Regional Director Atty. Bruce Ragas during their recent 53rd anniversary celebration.
Ragas said the region already has 39 Teen Centers and over 500 peer educators or young adolescents who are able to facilitate basic seminars on HEART to HEART Teen Talk where H.E.A.R.T. is an acronym of HIV AIDS and STIs, Early Sexual Encounter, Adolescent Sexuality, Reproductive Health, and Teenage Pregnancy.
On March 8-10, POPCOM celebrated the International Women’s Month with a staff development seminar on Gender Sensitivity that allowed the participants to get to know a part of their life journeys in the context and challenges of gender sensitivity.
It was held at the Emelia Hotel and Resort in Kawit, Medellin, Cebu with Tensie Villa as resource person.
The three-day activity discussed the journey of women in history, of how they were challenged to freedom until given rights as women.
Based on the 2020 Annual Report of the Responsible Parenthood and Reproductive Health Law of 2012 under the Key Result Area, Region 7 leads the most number of reported cases in the country at 3,155 as supported by data from Philippine National Police and the Gender and Development Desks (GADs) in the barangays.
POPCOM was established in 1969 by virtue of Executive Order No. 233 when the Ad Hoc Commission on Population recommended the official launch of the National Population Program and the Commission on Population was mandated to serve as the central coordinating and policy- making body of the government in the field of population.
Through the years, POPCOM came to be known as the Commission on Population and Development with three programs expanding from family planning to Responsible Parenthood and Family Planning, Adolescent Health and Development, and Population Development Integration. (HFG/PIA7with reports from POPCOM7)
