Public, private sector join hands to end malnutrition in NCR

QUEZON CITY, (PIA) -- Nutrition stakeholders on Friday join hands to end malnutrition in the National Capital Region.

This, after the National Nutrition Council - National Capital Region (NNC-NCR), together with the Regional Nutrition Committee (RNC) and the Regional Scaling Up Nutrition (SUN) networks of civil society, academe, and businesses sign a memorandum of understanding (MOU) during the Regional Launch of the SUN Movement 3.0 in NCR at the Crown Regency Hotel in Makati City.

According to National Nutrition Council (NNC) Assistant Secretary and Executive Director IV Azucena  M. Dayanghirang, in the nutrition sector, the country currently have three dilemmas, namely: undernutrition, overnutrition, and micronutrient deficiencies, due to food insecurity.

"Thus, there is an urgent need for us to work together to find sustainable solutions to the long-stemming problem of hunger and malnutrition in the Philippines," Dayanghirang said.

During the event, NNC-NCR Regional Nutrition Planning Coordinator (RNPC) Milagros Federizo led the Regional Launch of the SUN Movement by emphasizing the need for collaborative action from various sectors to help save all children from stunting and all forms of malnutrition.

The Scaling Up Nutrition (SUN) Movement is a global collective effort to enhance nutrition that unites governments, civil society, donors, businesses, the United Nations, academe, researchers, and citizens.

Federizo said the MOU signals the beginning of multi-sectoral partnerships of the members of the Regional SUN networks in NCR. And they remain hopeful that the members will be able to contribute to the collective efforts in bringing nutrition improvement that we all desire, particularly in NCR.

Now in its 3rd phase, the SUN Movement aims to eradicate all forms of malnutrition. It assures that every child, teenager, mother, and family realizes their right to food and nutrition, develops their full potential, and contributes to creating sustainable and productive communities by 2030.

One of the Regional SUN Network members from the business sector, Ms. Corazon T. Tamase, president of the Natureearth Corp., during her statement of commitment, shared how she was one of the identified malnourished children who benefitted from the nutrition program 50 years ago, which made her stronger, healthier and smarter. She said that being part of the SUN Movement gives her the opportunity to give back and help the country.

Tamase also encouraged the private sector to help in scaling up nutrition.

Scaling up is a challenge and we are left with a choice. Changing the world starts with a choice and surely as business owners and private sectors, we can empower and embrace a stronger nation,” she said. (PIA-NCR)
