MGB reiterates importance of geohazard maps in disaster preparedness

KORONADAL CITY, South Cotabato (PIA) -- The Mines and Geosciences Bureau (MGB) here continues to remind local government units to utilize geohazard maps and vulnerability risk assessment maps to increase their competence on managing hazards, in line with the observance of National Disaster Resilience Month this July.

In an interview with the Philippine Information Agency, MGB XII regional director Engr. Efren Carido reiterated the importance of these specialized maps to boost disaster preparedness measures.

“Geohazard maps and vulnerability risk assessment maps are given to local government units for them to prepare, develop and organize their Disaster Risk Reduction Management plan,” Engr. Carido said.

Engr. Carido underscored that “geohazards do not have to become a disaster if people are informed and prepared.”

Experts from MGB regularly monitor areas which are naturally prone and susceptible to landslide and flooding.

“Pag bigay natin, hindi lang basta bigay lang. Meron talagang IEC para maintindihan nila paano mag interpret ng mapa,” he added.

The official revealed they already completed the geohazard mapping of all cities and municipalities in the region. (PIA XII)
