New MRF opens at Manila Zoo

CALOOCAN CITY, (PIA) --The Manila city government opened its material recovery facility (MRF) at Manila Zoo on Monday, July 18.

Manila Mayor Maria Sheilah "Honey" Lacuna-Pangan and Department of Public Services OIC Kayle Nicole Amurao led the ceremonial opening of the facility that is composed of bioreactor, biocomposer, and two units of biodegradable waste shredder, all of which were donated by DENR-EMB-NCR and DOST-ITDI.

The MRF is capable of processing biodegradable waste, recyclable waste, and residual with potential into items which may be upcycled into items for livelihood or for reuse.

Byproducts made by the "Tarpaulin mo, Ireresiklo ko" project are usable items such as eco bags, fans, pouches, and other household items which may be used at home or given as a gift.

Soil conditioner or fertilizer is the byproduct of a combination of animal manure from Manila Zoo, dried leaves from those collected on the streets, and leftover vegetables collected in Divisoria.

The soil conditioners are distributed in various organizations and may also be bought by common consumers for 10 pesos per kilogram.

Those who want to order in bulk may also contact the DPS Operations Division at 5310-1261.

A total of 29,806 kilograms of biodegradable wastes have been processed by the bioreactor since January 24, while 15,384 kilograms in total for the biocomposter since April 11 of this year.

Lacuna said the facility will be of great help in recycling waste materials that can still be useful, be a source of livelihood and most important, lessen the volume of garbage produced in the city. (MPIO/PIA-NCR)
