ASEAN Plus Youth Volunteer Award 2022 recognizes youth achievements

QUEZON CITY (PIA) -- In celebration of the 55th anniversary of ASEAN, the Central Committee of the Ho Chi Minh Communist Youth Union (HCYU) and the National Committee on Youth of Vietnam convened the ASEAN Plus Youth Volunteer Award 2022 on 26 August.

First Secretary of the HCYU Central Committee Bui Quang Huy, in his opening remarks, emphasized the youth’s critical role in ASEAN Community-building efforts.

I strongly believe that you, as the current and future leaders of the country and the region, will contribute significantly to the development of ASEAN, helping ASEAN form a unified and prosperous community, in accordance with the ASEAN motto: one vision, one identity, one community,” he said.

The ASEAN Plus Youth Volunteer Award 2022, supported by the ASEAN Youth Program Fund, aims to create a favorable environment for the youth of ASEAN and neighboring countries to share and discuss their ideas and experiences in volunteerism.

The event also aims to recognize outstanding individual volunteers as well as youth organizations for their contribution within ASEAN and beyond. In total, 10 individuals and 11 organizations from ASEAN Member States (AMS), China, and Japan received the awards.

Representatives of the Quang Binh provincial government, ASEAN Senior Officials Meeting on Youth, Office for International Youth Exchange Cabinet Office of Japan, as well as youth volunteers and volunteering organizations from AMS and Japan were present at the awarding ceremony.

Meanwhile, the ASEAN Plus Youth Volunteers Forum took place on 24-25 August. Deputy Secretary-General of ASEAN for ASEAN Socio-Cultural Community Ekkaphab Phanthavong joined the forum virtually, through his pre-recorded remarks.

ASEAN will continue to elevate the role of volunteerism in building resilience and realizing sustainable development,” he said. He further announced that ASEAN will soon implement the ASEAN Volunteers project through funding from the Government of Japan, in collaboration with the Japan International Cooperation Center, the UN Volunteers, and the IFRC.

These initiatives are part of ASEAN Work Plan on Youth 2021-2025, under Priority Area 4: Participation and Engagement, particularly Program 4.1: Fostering 21st Century Skills/Soft skills among ASEAN youth through volunteerism and leadership in community projects.
