LGU Tacurong City trains home-grown talents in fashion design

TACURONG CITY, Sultan Kudarat (PIA) –- Taking note of the talents and skills of Tacurongnons,  the city tourism office here has recently ventured in an extensive five-day training program in fashion design, taking inspirations from various events held in the city and as a way to boost the local fashion industry from the effects of the pandemic.

City tourism officer Emelie P. Jamorabon said “Tacurongnons are talented people and have great potential to bring and put the city’s name on headlines whether in sports, dances and even in fashion design.”

"LGU Tacurong City wants to develop its local home-grown artists in the community especially in fashion design. We wish to develop the skills and character of our local fashion designers and eventually establish a well-organized association that will be our pool of official fashion designers," Jamorabon said.

After the first LGU-funded training workshop held last year, eight of the 16 trainees are returning with determination and dedication to try their abilities to produce artcrafts and creations hoping these could be noticed in the world of fashion.

Some trainees on the first day even don’t have enough knowledge, and there are those who even don’t know how to draw their designs, returning resource speaker Xioti Chiu, director of Fashion Design Alliane Mindanao, recalled of them.

Jamorabon also recollected hearing from these trainees how they made use of DIY guides from YouTube and other media platforms, just to make a design because they don’t have the luxury to be into formal fashion school which to them are so much expensive.

With few graduates of last year’s training trying to pick up the pieces in fashion design, this time the LGU chose participants willing to produce quality outputs, “iyong mga taong nag-e-engage talaga in designing costumes, kasi nung nakaraan, maraming sumali pero nakita natin na konti lang talaga ang nakapag- produce.

But, the good thing there is, from among those participants there are three who were able to join in the FADAL Mindanao, a fashion designers group. And they already went to Thailand to showcase their artpieces, their creations and one of them Julien Gentica, a recognized national costume designer in the Philippines,” the city tourism chief said.

This weeklong extensive training focused on four areas for learning, i.e fashion design 101, haute couture and its technique, pattern making for ladies’ wear and pattern making for men’s wear. The trainees were also taught how to get the exact measurement of a client as well as how to’s in getting the one-time fitting.

Jamoraban said, outputs of the trainees will also be featured in the upcoming Fashion Show during the Inugyunay Festival in December this year and future shows in Tacurong City. (ACAgad)
