PALO, Leyte (PIA) -- After two years since the COVID-19 pandemic began in March 2020, the provincial government of Leyte will conduct its first in-person commemoration of the 78th Leyte Gulf Landings on October 20.

Frances Ann B. Petilla, former Mayor of Palo, Leyte and now the Leyte Tourism consultant, said this will be the first face-to-face celebration after two years

Invitations to foreign dignitaries particularly from Australia, Japan, United States of America, and United Kingdom were already sent by the province.

It is also expected that President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. will grace the big event in Leyte as he was invited by the executive committee to be the guest of honor during the commemorative program at the MacArthur National and Memorial Park, in Candahug, Palo, Leyte.

The remaining 33 living World War II veterans were also invited.

According to Nenita Brazil of the Philippine Veterans Affairs Office, the 33 living World War II veterans will be conferred the US Congressional Gold Medal Award during the 78th commemoration in recognition of their heroism and sacrifices during World War II.

Various activities will start as early as October 14 through a grand opening program, fireworks display, motorcross competition, among others.

Aside from the host municipality, the local government unit of Tacloban, Dulag, Tolosa, all in Leyte and Guiuan in Eastern Samar will also conduct various activities.

October 20 is a historic event commemorating the return of General Douglas MacArthur and his staff paving the way for the liberation of the Philippines from the hands of the Japanese forces. (MMP/CBA/PIA-8)
