BORONGAN CITY (PIA) – Some 1,000 senior citizens in this city availed of the free eye check-up and prescription eyeglasses through the Oplan Eye Check-up conducted by the local government unit (LGU) on October 21-22 at the city plaza.
Vergie Buna, president of the Senior Citizen Association in Borongan said that during the two-day activity, the senior citizens availed different eye services and doble vista eye glasses from an eye specialist.
Buna assured that the city government will conduct the same activity on another date for those senior citizens who were not able to avail of the Oplan Eye Check-up.
Dr. Katrina Carmel Velasco of the Rural Health Unit - Sta. Fe and the team leader of the volunteers emphasized that the activity was made possible through the efforts of Dr. Rowena Agda, wife of Borongan City Mayor Dayan Agda, who coordinated with his former classmate Dr. Catalino Jadoc, an eye specialist in Tacloban, to head the Oplan Eye Check-up.
She also shared that Dr. Agda told her that all senior citizens should be catered to aside from the indigent ones.
“According to the results of the examinations done by Dr. Jadoc, prescriptive eyeglasses and doble vista eyeglasses will be provided to the senior citizens,” Dr. Velasco said.
Meanwhile, Dr. Jadoc revealed that the LGU-Borongan paid for the eyeglasses while Mayor Agda and the LGU officials shouldered the doble vista eyeglass.
Jojito Acla of the City Cooperative and Development Office, represented Mayor Agda and conveyed his gratitude to the medical team and the FISCAB Association for a successful activity which was in line with the National Elderly Week Celebration in October. (MMP/SDC/PIA Eastern Samar with BCIO)
