DUMAGUETE CITY, Negros Oriental, Dec. 2 (PIA) -- The Department of Health (DOH) here has intensified its training assistance for local government units (LGUs) through the municipal/city health officers together with their interventionists in the establishment of community rehabilitation.

This was disclosed by DOH Officer in Charge Provincial Officer Jennifer Remollo in a Kapihan sa PIA forum.

Remollo lamented the growing prevalence of illegal drug use among Filipinos.

“With the prevalence right now for the whole Philippines, every 100 million population, 1.8% of it are Filipinos affected with illegal drugs, so it is a big problem to us,” said Remollo.

Drugs and substance abuse are perennial problems that also hinder psychological and emotional development, especially among young people, she added.

Remollo cited some signs of the advanced stage of  drug addiction which includes redness of eyes, clumsiness, lack of coordination, slurred speech, trembling hands, among others.

She added that some factors that lead young people to engaged in illegal drugs are due to peer pressure in the schools, curiosity, family problems, and lack of attention.

Drug abuse is costly and a serious major health problem that affects everyone including individuals, family, and the community.

Remollo recommended that the best venue for partnership between the schools and family to address illegal drug use is during the parent-teacher-community association meetings.

“So that if the schools or teachers have noticed the behavior or signs of the students, this can be addressed at once. Addiction is curable and it’s not too late yet if you can inform your guidance counselors and parents,” added Remollo. (JCT/PIA7 Negros Oriental)
