MANILA, (PIA) -- President Ferdinand R. Marcos Jr. on Friday, Dec. 30 urged Filipinos to continue to embody the virtues of excellence, patriotism, and perseverance that were exhibited by National Hero Dr. Jose Rizal in his lifetime, as the country commemorates the 126th anniversary of Rizal’s martyrdom.

May (Dr. Jose) Rizal’s determination to achieve real change empower the Filipinos of today to become vigilant of the social ills that may threaten our liberty,” Pres. Marcos said, emphasizing that despite the challenges faced by the young Rizal back then, the national hero enlightened Filipinos about oppression, injustice and corruption during the Spanish colonial period.

May he continue to become a role model to all of us who aspire to impart our knowledge and dedicate our abilities to the betterment of society,” he added.

The Chief Executive also pointed out to take this occasion to reflect on the kind of life that Filipinos want to live.

After all, true heroism does not only mean offering your life for your country, but also fighting your own silent battles and working within your capacities to bring about a better future we wish to see for the present and succeeding generations,” he said.

Pres. Marcos led the commemoration in front of the Rizal Monument, the most recognizable landmark in Luneta. The Rizal Monument serves a meaningful national heritage for Filipinos, commemorating the heroic act of Rizal to his country.

The President was joined by First Lady Liza Araneta-Marcos, and his sons Ilocos Norte First District Rep. Sandro Marcos, Joseph Simon Marcos, and William Vincent Marcos, among others. (PIA-NCR)
