MMDA collects over 9k cigarette butts on MM streets

PASIG CITY, (PIA) -- The Metropolitan Manila Development Authority (MMDA) recently reported that over 9,000 cigarette butts were collected from last year.

Based on MMDA's Health and Environmental Protection Office record, cigarette butt tops the commonly thrown garbage in the streets of Metro Manila with a total of 9,820 from February to December 27, 2022.

Paper waste came in next with a total of 2,269 followed by candy wrappers with a total of 1,978 collected for the same period.

Meanwhile, a total of 993 plastic wastes were collected and followed by other types of garbage with a total of 468. Other obstructions and stick garbage were also collected.

MMDA reminds the public to be responsible citizens and dispose garbage properly.

Under MMDA Regulation No. 96-009 or the Anti-Littering Law, littering in public places has a fine of P500 to P1,000 or community service. (MMDA/PIA-NCR)
