Comelec holds VoterEd, satellite registration in schools

QUEZON CITY (PIA) -- The Commission on Elections on Monday (10 January) launched its voter education seminar with satellite registration in select schools nationwide ahead of the 2023 Barangay and Sangguniang Kabataan (SK) Elections.

Spearheaded by the Offices of the Regional Election Director (OREDs), Offices of the Provincial Election Supervisor (OPESs) and Offices of the Election Officer (OEOs), Communications Focal Persons partnered with the Education and Information Department (EID) and identified 30 schools to visit in select provinces nationwide from 9-13 January.

On the first two days of the session, COMELEC was able to conduct the seminars to a total of 4,629 senior high school students in the provinces of Isabela, Cagayan, Negros Oriental, Tarlac, Bohol, Lanao del Norte, Davao, Zamboanga and Capiz.

The seminar tackled the topics on the importance of being a voter, the step-by-step process of voter registration, the qualifications and duties of elected officials in the Barangay and SK, the fight against disinformation in elections, and others.

COMELEC has also successfully conducted satellite registration in the schools for 738 regular applicants and 982 SK applicants, for a running total of 1,730 registrants as of day two of the voter education and registration drive.

Chairman George Erwin M. Garcia conveys his gratitude to the COMELEC field officials whose proactive engagement made the activity a reality, and to the school officials and teachers who have always been invaluable partners of the Commission in all its electoral undertakings.

The COMELEC, through the EID, fully commits that the five-day training is only the first leg of its voter education cum satellite registration drive.

“It is our hope that we will be able to reach even the remotest island municipalities and the farthest barangays in the fulfillment of our mandate to educate and inform in order to engender a more active and engaged Filipino electorate,” the COMELEC said. (COMELEC / PIA-NCR)
