QUEZON CITY, (PIA) --President Ferdinand R. Marcos, Jr. will lead the 2023 National Tax Campaign launch, Tuesday, February 7 at the Philippine International Convention Center in Pasay City.
President Marcos Jr. in his first State of the Nation Address (SONA) last year said tax administration reforms will be in place to increase revenue collection as the economy is expected the grow by 6.5 to 7.5 percent this year.
Marcos also said the country’s tax system will be adjusted to catch up with the rapid developments of the digital economy, including the imposition of value-added tax on digital service providers.
In a statement, Bureau of Internal Revenue (BIR) Commissioner Romeo D. Lumagui, Jr. said they raised the tax collection target by over P500 billion compared to 2022 target of P2.1 trillion saying they aim to raise P2.6 trillion this year.
Lumagui said the full digitalization of the bureau’s administration and operation machineries and strict enforcement of tax laws and regulations through systematic review and investigation of tax returns will in turn help them to achieve their target.
In another statement, other revenue officials explained that the BIR generates annually almost all it’s take from voluntary compliance, and roughly only three percent from investigation, however they said investigation plays a crucial role in enhancing voluntary compliance. (pia-ncr)
