QUEZON CITY, (PIA) -- The Land Transportation Franchising and Regulatory Board (LTFRB) once again reminded the drivers of public vehicles that the 20 percent discount will be granted to elderly passengers, PWDs and students.
According to LTFRB Chairperson Teofilo Guadiz, those who do not comply with the law in this regard have appropriate punishment in addition to the punishment that will be awarded to them by the LTFRB.
Pursuant to RA 11314 or "Student Fare Discount Act" signed by former President Rodrigo Duterte, students such as senior citizens and persons with disability (PWD) will receive a 20 percent discount on fares in any public utility vehicle (PUV).
The LTFRB has a separate order regarding this under the issued Memorandum Circular No. 2017-024 that provides discounts to students, senior citizens, and PWD.
The LTFRB memorandum states that students will receive a discount on fares from Monday to Sunday, even during summer break, and legal and special legal holidays on PUVs such as public utility buses, public utility jeepneys, taxis and the like which are vehicles-for-hire, tricycles, trains, aircraft, and marine vessels.
However, this benefit does not cover students taking post-graduate studies such as masteral, doctoral, medicine, law, and others.
According to the LTFRB, any driver who violates this will be fined P1,000 to P5,000 and the franchise of the used passenger vehicle may be revoked. (PIA-NCR)
