House assures support for judicial reform measures

MANILA, (PIA) -- The House of Representatives assured that the judicial reform measures will be promoted in its chamber so that the justice system in the country can be further improved.

According to House Speaker Martin Romualdez, the House and Senate are committed to work together to reform the justice system in the country.

Romualdez said one of the House's plans is to amend the Revised Penal Code that was passed by Congress in 1930 or some 92 years ago.

The lawmaker explained that such law should be updated because it no longer covers crimes caused by the use of modern technology and the internet such as cybercrime and transnational crime.

Romualdez added that the granting of hazard pay to regional trial court judges and prosecutors should also be reviewed.

Judicial reform measures also include the formation of a Criminal Justice Reform Commission that will investigate and prevent the awarding of wrongful convictions and fine those involved in the unauthorized practice of law. (PIA-NCR)
